INDIANA UNIVERSITY MEN’S BASKETBALL LATE SEASON PLAYER POWER RANKINGS

WRITTEN + EDITED BY JORDYN BONTRAGER

From a team perspective, the 2024-2025 campaign simply has not gone according to plan. Mike Woodson looked like a prime B1G Coach of the Year candidate heading into the season, and now he will be looking for a new job at it’s conclusion.

With so many quality pieces in place, the team’s collective instability has been puzzling. The recipe seemed delicious on paper in the preseason, but the ingredients just have not blended properly for the boys in B-Town. There was always a hint of hesitancy with regards to how everything would fit together, and that hesitancy has proved legitimate. One of the most talent-rich rosters in the nation has failed to synchronize in what has turned out to be one of the more disappointing seasons in this program’s history.

In terms of the individual pieces, some have fared better than others. Here are how each IU men’s hoops player has ranked from an overall perspective.

12 | DALLAS JAMES

The next time James steps on the court during a game will be his first time doing so as a Hoosier.

11 | JAKAI NEWTON/GABE CUPPS

While Cupps is definitely out for the rest of the season as he recovers from meniscus surgery, there is still hope that the team will get Jakai Newton back from a mid-December lower body operation. The pair have played only 4x games apiece.

10 | LANGDON HATTON

Hatton has not done anything spectacular this season, but his bouldering build + steady presence have been helpful when needed.

9 | KANAAN CARLYLE

Once upon a time, Kanaan Carlyle was pegged a potential 1st-Round pick in the upcoming 2025 NBA draft. That was before a dreadful year with the Hoosiers. Will he be back on this depth chart in Bloomington next season?

8 | BRYSON TUCKER

There have been some obvious growing pains, but there is no denying the type of glowing potential this diaper dandy holsters.

7 | ANTHONY LEAL

In a largely unforeseen turn of events, Anthony Leal has entrenched himself in the starting unit via his intelligent style of play, impeccable defensive instincts + circus shot-making ability.

6 | TREY GALLOWAY

Like most of the guys on this team alike, Galloway has been decent this season. He has remained the team’s top playmaker, but his decision-making has been a bit questionable at times.

5 | MYLES RICE

Rice was supposed to be the team’s primary table-setter this season, but has failed to carry on the momentum that he garnered last season throughout his inaugural Pac-12 Freshman of the Year season. By no means has he been terrible, but the streakiness which he exudes on a game-to-game basis has been rough.

4 | MALIK RENEAU

Reneau is a critical component of this team, and was crucial off the bench in the upset win over Michigan State in East Lansing. The team has looked better with him off the court at times, though (example: 3x game winning streak to start the year with the big fella sidelined with an injury).

3 | LUKE GOODE

It took him awhile to find his groove, but the transfer has not looked back since establishing a rhythm (31-55 from deep in 2025).

2 | MACKENZIE MGBAKO

Mgabko is still undoubtedly this team’s top NBA prospect, but he has progressively tapered off as the year has progressed after an elite start to the year.

1 | OUMAR BALLO

Arguably the top transfer in college basketball this past offseason, Ballo has been everything the Hoosiers needed him to be and more. He may not go down as the most elite of the bunch, but he will certainly be remembered among a long list of great Indiana Hoosier big men.
