¿IS THERE STILL TIME FOR CAM REDDISH?

WRITTEN + EDITED BY JORDYN BONTRAGER

With Jordan Goodwin’s rapid rise from a fringe two-way contract to rotation regular (20 GAMES | 5 STARTS | 6.5 PPG | 3.9 RPG | 1.5 APG | 1.2 SPG | 0.6 BPG | 48.1% FG | 42.9% 3FG (!) | 81.8% FT) for the most polarizing franchise in the NBA, it was only a matter of time before Rob Pelinka and his big wig buddies parted ways with former lottery pick turned “bust” Cam Reddish. Yesterday, that aforementioned time came to fruition.

Now, the foregone conclusion is that Reddish could/should/will become the next NBA misfit to try their hand at a career resurrection in China.

The Paul George-esque potential has always resided within Reddish’s profile, it has simply never translated into reality. Standing 6’7” with a slim but serviceable build (217 lbs) and disruptive length (7’1” wingspan), the physical tools have been there from the jump. His vertical may not be the most eye-catching, but he has utilized his moderate bounce x superb lateral quickness nicely to improve his defensive reputation throughout his tenure with the Lakers. With his offensive upside never materializing into any sense of steady efficiency (career 8.5 PPG on underwhelming shooting splits of 39.8% FG x 32.2% 3FG x 82.1% FT), the strides he has shown on the less glamorous end bode well for his chances of extending his professional playing career.

Still only 25-years-old (26 in September), time is fortunately still Cam’s friend as we look ahead to the future. However, the clock is officially ticking in terms of his shot at making a legitimate name for himself in the NBA. Perhaps an injury-plagued team signs him for the rest of the SZN. Maybe a contender throws a 10-day audition his way to entertain the idea of keeping his versatile defensive abilities on the bench in case of postseason emergencies.

In all reality, the likeliest scenario for the former Duke Blue Devil involves some team overseas taking a flyer on him. That route could prove fruitful for Reddish, as he would almost certainly become said team’s primary option offensively, thus providing him the opportunity to play freely and full of confidence. Assuming said audition went well, we could see the swingman back in the NBA as soon as next season.

Time will tell what the universe has planned for Cam’s fate, and there are assuredly a heaping of hecklers out there who believe Reddish’s NBA career has come to a close. Let the record reflect that we are not a part of that group.

Keep going, Cameron!
