PREDICTING NEXT SEASON’S BREAKOUT HOOPER FOR TERI MOREN’S INDIANA HOOSIERS

WRITTEN + EDITED BY JORDYN BONTRAGER

Unfortunately for fans of the Indiana University women’s basketball team, we have seen the last of Sydney Parrish x Chloe Moore-McNeil x Karoline Striplin in the candy stripes. In a more unforeseen turn of events, that same sentiment now rings true for Julianna “Jules” LaMendola following today’s announcement that she would be taking her talents to the transfer portal.

While these subtractions are undoubtedly tough to stomach, the Hoosier faithful should take comfort in knowing that they are home to one of the nation’s most inspirational coaches who always seems to get the most out of her players. They should also exhale a sigh of relief in knowing that a few of next seasons’ *assumed* returnees have already proven themselves capable of making major contributions from a leadership vantage point (Yarden Garzon, Shay Ciezki, Lilly Meister). Plus, there is a pair of polarizing prospects en route to Assembly Hall via the incoming freshman class of 2025: recently crowned Indiana Miss Basketball Maya Makalusky + the state of Missouri’s #2 ranked player Nevaeh Caffey.

Did we mention that there is a range of role players from this season’s squad who (again, assuming they return) could be poised for a breakout campaign in 2025-2026?

While a position battle with Caffey is inevitable, Lexus Bargesser and her X-factor potential seem due to join her fellow senior-to-be Ciezki in the starting backcourt. Henna Sandvik, another impending senior, flashed serious glimpses of 3&D brilliance at various points this season. We may not have seen a ton of them, but do not snooze on the prospect of any one (or even all of) Valentyna Kadlecova (showcased a few sporadic signs of hidden gem potential in her spot minutes as a frosh), Sharnecce Currie-Jelks (15.2 PPG | 6.9 RPG | 1.4 SPG | 1.0 BPG | 53.9% FG at UTM in 2022-2023), or Faith Wiseman (ESPN’s #61-ranked recruit in last year’s freshman crop) spreading their wings next season.

There is no denying that each of those ladies made their own respective case for this argument through their time on the court this season. However, this team’s most likely breakout candidate next year did not step foot on the floor for a single second this year. With all due respect to her, this opinion does not pertain to Sydney Fenn (although we do like her chances at a solid injury bounce back in the campaign to come).

This opinion is all about 2023 Illinois Miss Basketball, Lenee Beaumont.

With so many ups-and-downs transpiring on the court throughout 2024-2025, some may have forgotten that Beaumont was lost for the season before it even started. Following a relatively quiet (yet promising) freshman season, the ‘B-Town Big Guard Club’ member was sidelined for the entire duration of her sophomore year while dealing with a lingering knee ailment which resulted in a mid-December operation. In a bit of recent positive news regarding Beaumont’s recovery status, head skipper Moren mentioned her hopes to have the redshirt sophomore-to-be cleared for action by the end of May.

In another piece of unrelated positivity, that aforementioned redshirt sophomore-to-be can flat out HOOP. The proof is in the pudding when you go back and dissect her high school mixtapes, but you have to dig a little deeper within her freshman year film in order to decipher Beaumont’s killer potential.

If you had already seen the above ^ highlights AND/OR you took the time to view them now, then assuredly you saw a savvy playmaker with the blend of size x craftiness x shotmaking ability (we will give her a pass for the 4/16 she shot from distance as a freshman since SHE WAS A FRESHMAN) to keep wing defenders on their toes at all times. You truthfully do not even have to squint or impose any effort whatsoever in order to gather those observations.

When she gets going downhill, her stature presents her the bully ball option while her slipperiness opens up the finesse route. Her knack for finishing through contact combined with her subliminal secondary playmaking sauce can make her a nightmare for opposing resistance’s to counteract. She always made the right, conservative plays as a newbie. Assuming she feels more confident now given the time she has had to adapt and study the collegiate level of competition, Beaumont should be in store for a heightened sense of freedom to get risky in making things happen (especially with the playmaking crater caused by CMM’s departure).

As of today, Makalusky and Caffey are the incoming headliners for the Hoosiers as we look ahead to next SZN. Time will tell if the rest of the potential returnees come back and/or if any other major personnel maneuvers are made this offseason, but one thing to bank on is the breakout brewing within Lenee Beaumont as we daydream about the things to come next season in Bloomington.

Keep going, Beau!
