With a new GM-head coach combination pulling the strings behind closed doors, imagining the Indiana Fever making some offseason personnel adjustments was/is not as crazy as one may think. With Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston ushering a revolution in the Circle City, the organization’s new shot callers are sure to put in the time required for surrounding their rising stars with the best supporting cast possible. And with some serious star realignment actively transpiring across the league, some folks have pondered the thought of Indy pursuing another star to add to their collection of killers.
But why would they be in the market for a new weapon when they already holstered the power to retain one of the WNBA’s most lethal threats?
Fresh off her first two All-Star appearances in 2023 and 2024, it was only a matter of time before Kelsey Mitchell’s pen hit the extension papers. Yesterday, that time came to fruition.
The former Ohio State Buckeye has become one of the most beloved ballers in this franchise’s history through her first 7x seasons. Heading into the 2025 campaign, the Cincinatti native is the Fever’s second all-time in leader in points (3,923), three-pointers made (558) and minutes (7,085) while also holding the fourth spot in career assists (649). That is quite the decorated resume for the 29-year-old combo guard.
When you reflect on how last season played out, catalyst Caitlin Clark deserves all the credit in the world for spearheading the resurrection (as well as Mitchell’s recruitment). She is a generational talent who turned this team from a bottom dweller to a force to be reckoned with. But she could not do it alone, and opposed to common belief it was Mitchell, not Boston, who served as Clark’s trusty sidekick. The two showed some of the most pure backcourt chemistry we have ever seen, and the sky is the limit for how high they can climb together.
The 2024 season, the squad’s first postseason appearance since 2016, is going to be a tough act to follow for this upcoming version of the Indiana Fever. But now that they have had a full season to build cohesion together, we could be in store for the greatest season of all-time from a starting backcourt perspective. Branching off of this, we could also be in store for a legitimate championship run if all of the pieces fit together properly. Thankfully, one of the main pieces is back in her rightful place.
