HOW SOON IS TOO SOON TO INCLUDE CAITLIN CLARK IN GOAT CONVERSATIONS?

The WNBA has yielded some truly magnificent basketball players since the league’s inception back in 1997. From Candace Parker to Lisa Leslie to Sheryl Swoopes to Tamika Catchings to Diana Taurasi, the W has produced a collection of transcendent talents throughout it’s first 27 seasons. In spite of the fandom that some of these ladies developed during their tenures, the association just never seemed to blossom into the spectacle that it genuinely is.

That was until a superheroine sporting an Indiana Fever jersey took the league by storm in it’s 28th year.

In her inaugural campaign, Caitlin Clark completely altered the landscape of women’s basketball. Viewership numbers catapulted. Ticket sales (and subsequent prices) skyrocketed. After far too long, female hoopers making a living on the basketball floor started garnering the type of respect that they have ALWAYS deserved.

Clark’s numbers speak for themselves: 19.2 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 8.4 APG (highest single season average in WNBA history), 1.3 SPG and 0.7 BPG on shooting splits of 41.7% FG/34.4% 3FG/90.6% FT. We could make a list of her records, accolades and acknowledgements from her historic rookie season, but it would take ages to get through them all. In short, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year was a game changer. Scratch that, she was a catalyst. Actually, labeling her as anything shy of a godsend seems unjust.

Think what you want and say what you please, but we are all witnessing greatness in the form of Caitlin Clark. Not the type of greatness that falls in line and compares to other greatness, we are talking about the greatest type of greatness. She may wear #22, but it would be wise for the product of Iowa to change the number on the back of her jersey to #1.

Clark was not simply one of the greatest rookies in WNBA history, she was THE greatest rookie in WNBA history. She is not just one of the best players in the WNBA, she is THE best player in the WNBA.

Not only is Caitlin Clark one of the greatest basketball players in the history of women’s basketball, she is THE greatest basketball player in the history of women’s basketball. If you are not comfortable admitting that much to yourself, you may want to re-evaluate your passion for this sport.

BAHHHHHHH! ;)
